The menu

Do diners need to download an app?

No. They scan the QR code on the table and your menu opens in their phone’s web browser.

Can I get rid of my paper menus?

We don’t recommend going without them. BennyEats is digital-first: fewer printed menus, always up to date. But keep some printed menus, because:

  • some diners can’t or won’t use a phone;
  • allergen information must be available in writing or by asking your staff;
  • the price list at your entrance stays.

When you change a price, update any printed menu that shows prices too.

Do I need photos of my dishes?

No. You can add your own photos, choose an example photo from our small library, or show “No photo yet”. Example photos always carry the words “Example photo, not this restaurant’s dish”, because anything else could mislead diners.

If you’d like us to film your dishes, ask us. It’s an optional extra.

How do I change a price or mark a dish sold out?

From your dashboard, on your phone or computer. Mark a dish “Sold out today” or hide it, and diners who open or reload the menu normally see the change within about a minute. Change prices and descriptions yourself whenever you need to.

Can diners order or pay through it?

No. Diners can add dishes to a list on their phone and show it to your server. You take the order as you do now.

Allergens

Who is responsible for the allergen information?

You are, as the food business. The menu shows a dish’s allergens only once you’ve signed them off, and it shows only what you’ve told us. Every dish tells diners to ask their server before they order.

What does “Avoid allergens” do?

It’s always the first filter on the menu. Diners tick what they need to avoid, and dishes that contain it are hidden, based on your signed-off list. It helps diners, and it supports your staff’s allergen conversation. It doesn’t replace it.

What if I change a recipe?

Hide the dish straight away, and keep it hidden until you’ve signed off its new allergens.

The dashboard and diners’ privacy

What does the dashboard show?

Which dishes diners look at, which they add to their list, which they look at but don’t add, and which dishes nobody adds to their list. It updates through service as diners scan. You also see diners’ ratings after the meal, as weekly totals.

Can I see who my diners are?

No. The dashboard counts, it doesn’t identify people. Figures show up only once enough diners have scanned, so no single diner can be picked out. Ratings are shown as totals once a dish has enough of them.

Can I use the ratings in my marketing?

No. Ratings are private feedback to help you improve. Don’t publish them, show them to diners, or use them to call a dish “top rated” or “most loved”. Never rate your own dishes or ask anyone to.

Do diners need an account?

No. Diners use the menu as guests. They can create an account if they want to keep favourites and their list between visits. Their allergen filter stays on their own phone and is never stored in their account. They can delete their account at any time. See the diner privacy notice.

Money and the contract

How much is it?

£29.99 a month if you carry on after a 30-day free trial (no card needed for the trial). No setup fee, no minimum term, cancel any time. See pricing.

Who is my contract with?

With Sangeevan Sivathas, a sole trader trading as BennyEats. When the business becomes a limited company, the contract may move to the company, as the Online Terms for restaurants explain.
